Application
Application 1:
In buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9]:
  • unreinforced masonry and masonry veneer walls, nominally reinforced masonry where vertical joints in adjacent courses are aligned [see Article 9.20.9.1.], and loadbearing masonry elements reinforced as required by Article 9.20.1.2. in regions where the seismic spectral response acceleration, Sa(0.2), is greater than 0.35 [see Subsection 9.20.15.], where:
    • the walls are not in contact with the ground
    • the wall height above the foundation wall does not exceed 11 m, and
    • the roof or floor assembly above the first storey is not of concrete construction,
  • flat insulating concrete form walls not in contact with the ground, where:
    • the floor-to-floor height is not greater than 3 m,
    • the buildings are not more than 2 storeys in building height and they contain only a single dwelling unit, and
    • the buildings are erected in locations where the seismic spectral response acceleration, Sa(0.2), is not greater than 0.4,
  • mortar, grout, mortar joints, corbelling and protection for unit masonry foundation walls [see Sentence 9.15.2.2.(2)],
  • the installation of floor joists on foundation walls of flat insulating concrete form wall units [see Sentence 9.15.4.3.(5)],
  • cold joints in flat insulating concrete form foundation walls [see Sentence 9.15.4.5.(3)],
  • reinforcing around openings in flat insulating concrete form foundation walls [see Sentence 9.15.4.5.(4)],
  • tying of masonry exterior facing to the top of foundation walls that are reduced in thickness to permit the installation of such facing [see Sentence 9.15.4.7.(2)],
  • corbelling of masonry foundation walls supporting cavity walls [see Sentence 9.15.4.8.(1)],
  • interior masonry foundation walls not subject to lateral earth pressure [see Sentence 9.15.4.10.(1)], and
  • masonry units in chimneys [see Sentence 9.21.4.1.(1)] and fireplaces [see Sentence 9.22.1.2.(1)] that are not in contact with the ground.
Exceptions:
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.20.1.1.(2), which applies to masonry and insulating concrete form walls other than those described above, or where the walls are designed for specified loads on the basis of ultimate and serviceability limit states,
  • Sentence 9.20.5.2.(3), which applies to the design of steel angle lintels supporting masonry other than veneer, masonry and reinforced concrete lintels, and masonry arches,
  • Sentence 9.20.6.4.(4), which applies to masonry veneer required to be individually supported by the backing material,
  • Sentence 9.20.6.6.(1), which applies to slab facings and precast concrete panel facings, and
