Application
Application 1:
Configuration of flashing installed in cladding assemblies to which Subsection 9.27.3. applies [see Article 9.27.1.1. for application of Subsection 9.27.3.]:
  • at horizontal junctions between cladding elements,
  • at horizontal offsets in the cladding,
  • at horizontal lines where the cladding substrates change and where
    • the substrates differ sufficiently for stresses to be concentrated along the line of horizontal change, or
    • the installation of the cladding on the lower substrate may compromise the drainage of moisture from behind the cladding above, and
  • over exterior wall openings through cladding assemblies where the vertical distance from the bottom of the eave to the top of the trim is more than one-quarter of the horizontal overhang of the eave.
Exceptions:
except as stated in:
  • Clause 9.27.3.8.(2)(a), which applies where the upper cladding units overlap the lower cladding units by not less than 25 mm,
  • Clause 9.27.3.8.(2)(b), which applies where the cladding above and below the joint is outboard of a drained and vented air space and the horizontal detail is constructed so as to minimize the ingress of precipitation into the air space,
  • Clause 9.27.3.8.(2)(c), which applies to horizontal joints in stucco where the joint is finished with an expansion-contraction strip and the cladding is installed outboard of a drained and vented air space, and
  • Sentence 9.27.3.8.(6), which applies to openings for windows and doors provided with an integral exterior flange and designed to be installed on the exterior of essentially flat lock-seam metal siding without a head or sill flashing.

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability of:
  • inadequate up-stand inboard of the sheathing membrane or sheathing installed in lieu of the sheathing membrane,
  • inadequate slope to the exterior,
  • lack of end dams or inadequate height of end dams,
  • inadequate lap over the building element below, and
  • lack of a drip or inadequate offset of the drip from the face of the building element below.
This is to limit the probability of precipitation or meltwater ingress, or an inadequate dissipation of precipitation or meltwater to the exterior, which could lead to the excessive accumulation of moisture.
This is to limit the probability of deterioration, which could lead to compromised structural integrity of exterior walls or elements protected by exterior walls, which could lead to harm to persons.
