Application
Application 1:
Non-metallic piping systems containing flammable liquid or combustible liquid where problems of corrosion, contamination, or sanitation or standards of purity require special materials, in buildings, structures and open areas.
Application 2:
This also applies to:
Exceptions:
except as exempted in:
  • Sentences 4.1.1.1.(2) and (3), which apply to unique hazards at process plants, in transportation, for oil burning equipment, on farms and isolated construction projects, and the storage of aerosol products; and
  • Sentence 4.5.1.1.(2), which applies to:
    • tubing or casings and piping for oil or gas wells,
    • transmission pipelines,
    • piping for vehicles, aircraft, watercraft and portable or stationary engines,
    • piping systems in fuel dispensing stations and distilleries, and
    • piping within the scope of the applicable provincial boiler and pressure vessel codes.

Intent
Intent 1:
To exempt non-metallic materials from the application of Sentence 4.5.2.1.(2) if:
  • such materials are required for reasons of corrosion, contamination, or sanitation or standards of purity, and
  • certain standards are met.
This is to limit the probability that:
  • internal stress or mechanical damage will lead to failure of the piping, or
  • a chemical reaction with the liquid will lead to premature corrosion of the piping, which could lead to failure of the piping.
This is to limit the probability of the escape of liquid, which could lead to the ignition of vapour from a nearby ignition source, which could lead to harm to persons.
