Intent 1:
To supersede the requirements of Sentence 3.5.3.3.(1), which would otherwise require a room containing
elevator machinery to be separated from the elevator hoistway by a
fire separation, and waive such separation if certain conditions are
met [the room and the hoistway are separated from all other parts
of the building].
This is to limit the probability
that:
- a fire involving the room and hoistway will spread to
other parts of the building, which could lead to harm to persons in
other parts of the building, and
- a fire will spread from other parts of the building
into the room and hoistway, which could lead to:
- harm to persons in elevator cars in the hoistway, and
- the failure of the elevator machinery, which could lead
to harm to persons in elevator cars.
