Intent 1:
To limit the probability that stiff elements that
are not considered part of the Seismic Force Resisting System will
be subject to loads for which they were not designed, which could
lead to:
- stiffening of the structure, which could lead to a change
in the dynamic characteristics of the building structure (natural
period and mode shapes), which could lead to an increase in the inertial
forces in the building structure, and
- inadequate strength in the stiff elements.
This is to limit the probability of:
- the excessive deformation of, or excessive stress in,
the structural elements, which could lead to damage to the building,
or
- the excessive deformation of, or excessive stress in,
the building structure, which could lead to damage to the building,
which could impede the intended use and occupancy of the building.
