Application | Application 1: Basements used primarily
as storage garages, where the floor and roof
assemblies above the basements and the exterior
walls of the basements above the adjoining ground
level are constructed as fire separations of
masonry or concrete having a fire-resistance rating of
not less than 2 h. This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Exceptions:
except as exempted in Sentence 3.2.1.2.(2), which applies
to openings in exterior walls of basements where
certain conditions are met.

Intent | Intent 1: To allow a basement storage garage to be considered as a
separate building from the portion above if certain measures are taken.
These measures are to limit the probability of the spread of fire
from the garage to the upper portions of the building, which could lead to
damage to the building.
