Application
Application 1: 
Minimum fire-resistance rating of loadbearing walls, columns and arches supporting floor assemblies immediately above basements, in buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Application 2: 
This also applies to a crawl space required to be considered as a basement, as stated in Sentence 3.2.2.9.(1).
Exceptions: 
except as exempted in Sentences 3.2.2.42.(3), 3.2.2.43.(3), 3.2.2.44.(3), 3.2.2.45.(3), 3.2.2.46.(3), 3.2.2.47.(3) and 3.2.2.48.(3), which apply to loadbearing walls, columns and arches supporting floor assemblies entirely contained within dwelling units in a building of residential occupancy.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that the supports for a floor assembly will prematurely fail in a fire situation, which could lead to the collapse of the floor assembly, which could lead to the spread of fire from the basement to an upper storey during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons, including emergency responders.
Intent 2: 
To limit the probability that the supports for a floor assembly will prematurely fail in a fire situation, which could lead to the collapse of the floor assembly during the time required to achieve occupant safety and for emergency responders to perform their duties, which could lead to harm to persons, including emergency responders.
