Application 1: 
Minimum distance separating unprotected openings in two fire compartments, where:
This applies to buildings described in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.
Application 2: 
This also applies:
  • as stated in the latter part of Sentence 3.2.3.14.(3), to:
  • to external walls of two buildings that meet at a firewall at an angle of less than 135°, as stated in Sentence 3.1.10.6.(1), which also applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], as stated in Sentence 9.10.11.3.(1).
Exceptions: 
except as exempted in:
  • the first part of Sentence 3.2.3.14.(3), which applies to buildings that are sprinklered throughout,
  • Sentence 3.2.3.13.(1), which applies to the protection of openings in either the exterior wall of an exit or the exterior wall of a building under certain conditions, and
  • Sentence 3.2.3.19.(4), which applies to walkways of noncombustible construction used only as pedestrian thoroughfares.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability of the spread of fire from one fire compartment to an adjacent fire compartment through unprotected openings in the exterior wall of the fire compartment of origin, which could lead to harm to persons in the adjacent fire compartment.
