Application | Application 1: Lavatories, in washrooms required by Article 3.8.2.3. to
be barrier-free [washrooms in a storey to
which a barrier-free path of travel is required
in accordance with Article 3.8.2.1.]. Application 2: This also applies to lavatories in universal toilet
rooms provided primarily for the use of persons of both sexes with physical
disabilities, in lieu of facilities for persons with physical disabilities
in washrooms used by the general public, in existing buildings where alterations are being made, as stated in Sentence 3.8.2.3.(4) and Clause 3.8.3.12.(1)(c). This applies to buildings described
in Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A.

Intent | Intent 1: To limit the probability that a person using a manual wheelchair
or other manual mobility assistance device will not be able to use a lavatory
in a barrier-free washroom without the assistance of another person.
Intent 2: [Subclause (c)(i)] To exempt lavatories from the requirement
for a greater minimum width as stated in Sentence 3.8.1.3.(1) and permit
a lesser minimum width, on the basis that lavatories need not be wider to
allow proper usage by persons using manual wheelchairs or other manual mobility
assistance devices. |
