Application
Application 1: 
Side of exposure to fire for the fire-resistance rating of exterior walls of buildings.
This applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions: 
except that the exterior walls need not comply with the temperature rise limitations required by the standard tests referred to in Article 9.10.3.1. if:
  • such walls have a limiting distance of not less than 1.2 m, and
  • due allowance is made for the effects of heat radiation in accordance with the requirements in Part 3.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To clarify that the fire-resistance rating for exterior wall assemblies is determined by exposing the assemblies to fire from inside the building, which is expected to represent the most severe exposure condition.
