9.13.2.3.(1)
OH1OS2
ObjectiveOH1 Indoor Conditions
Attribution
[F40-OH1.1] Applies to materials installed to control the ingress of soil gas.
[F61-OH1.1,OH1.2,OH1.3] Applies to materials installed to control the ingress of moisture.
Application
Application 1:
Installation of bituminous materials to provide dampproofing for walls where the ground level inside is lower than the ground level outside, and for floors that are in contact with the ground, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions:
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.13.2.1.(3), which applies to
    • floors in garages,
    • floors in unenclosed portions of buildings, and
    • floors installed over not less than 100 mm of coarse clean granular fill in conformance with Article 9.16.2.1., and
  • Sentence 9.13.3.1.(1), which applies to walls and floors that are subject to hydrostatic pressure.
Application 2:
This also applies to the installation of bituminous materials that are installed to control the infiltration of soil gas through walls or roofs that are in contact with the ground, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions:
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.13.4.1.(2), which applies to the control of the infiltration of soil gas in
    • garages
    • unenclosed portions of buildings served by walls or roofs, and
    • buildings located where soil gas is at a sufficiently low concentration as to not constitute a hazard.

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability that the performance of installed bituminous materials will fall significantly below expectations with respect to moisture transfer resistance and airtightness in the case of walls.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • an inadequate resistance to moisture transfer from the ground, which could lead to the ingress of moisture from the ground, or
  • for walls, inadequate airtightness, which could lead to moisture and soil gas ingress.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • compromised thermal performance of components intended to provide resistance to heat transfer, which could lead to an inadequate control of the temperature of interior spaces,
  • water accumulation or an inadequate control of relative humidity,
  • the generation of pollutants from biological growth or from materials that become unstable on wetting,
  • deterioration, which could lead to compromised integrity of elements supported or protected by floors, foundation walls or roofs of underground structures, or
  • the ingress of soil gas.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • negative effects on the air quality of indoor spaces,
  • the inadequate thermal comfort of persons, and
  • contact with moisture.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
