Application
Application 1:
Make-up air, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] that contain a single dwelling unit that is provided with a sub-floor depressurization system for an interior floor-on-ground and contains fuel-fired appliances that are required to be vented and are vented through a chimney [see Sentence 9.32.3.8.(9)].
Exceptions:
except as stated in Sentence 9.13.4.1.(2), which applies to the control of the infiltration of soil gas in:
  • floors in garages, and
  • buildings located where soil gas is at a sufficiently low concentration as to not constitute a hazard.

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability that an inadequate supply of make-up air will lead to the excessive depressurization of dwelling units, which could lead to:
  • pollutant ingress, including soil gas, combustion products from the backdrafting of appliances that are susceptible to spillage or from parking garages, or particulates, or
  • the ingress of moisture from the ground.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • the generation of pollutants from biological growth or from materials that become unstable on wetting, or
  • deterioration, which could lead to compromised integrity of floors or of elements protected by the floors.
This is to limit the probability of negative effects on the air quality of indoor spaces, which could lead to harm to persons.
