ObjectiveOS1 Fire Safety
Attribution
[F01-OS1.1] Applies to the walls of any chimney or flue pipe, which are required to be constructed to be flame-tight.
Application
Application 1: 
Flame-tightness of walls of chimneys and flue pipes, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], where:
  • rectangular masonry or concrete chimneys are not more than 12 m in height and serve fireplaces or appliances having a combined total rated heat output of 120 kW or less [see Clause 9.21.1.1.(1)(a)], and
  • flue pipes are connected to such chimneys [see Clause 9.21.1.1.(1)(b)].
Exceptions: 
except as stated in Sentence 9.21.1.1.(2), which applies to flue pipes serving gas-, oil- or solid-fuel-burning appliances that are covered by the standards referenced in Sentences 9.33.5.2.(1) and 9.33.5.3.(1).
Application 2: 
This also applies to rectangular masonry or concrete chimneys not more than 12 m in height that serve fireplaces or appliances having a combined total rated heat output of 120 kW or less, in buildings to which Part 6 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 6], as stated in Sentence 6.3.1.2.(1).

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that gaps or anomalies in chimneys or flue pipes will lead to the escape of flames, which could lead to the ignition of combustible building components, which could lead to harm to persons.
