Application
Application 1: 
Calculation of wind load for the design of materials, components, assemblies and their connections, where these are:
  • subject to wind load, and
  • required to be designed to resist wind load.
This applies to building materials, components, assemblies and their interfaces described in Sentence 5.1.2.1.(1) that are installed in buildings to which Part 5 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.2.(1) of Division A for application of Part 5].
Application 2: 
This also applies to cladding assemblies installed on buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9] where:
  • the cladding assembly is not addressed in Section 9.27., or
  • the cladding assembly does not comply with the prescriptive requirements of Section 9.27.
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 5.4.1.1.(3), which applies to air barrier systems where a lack of resistance to air leakage will not negatively affect health, safety, the intended use of the building or the operation of building services, and
  • Sentence 5.2.2.2.(3), which applies where it can be shown that the material, component, assembly or connection in question is subject to less that 100% of the wind load.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability of using inappropriate wind load assumptions, which could lead to the deflection, movement and deterioration of required environmental separation elements subject to wind load, which could lead to the failure of such elements, which could lead to the inadequate control of:
  • the total heat loss or gain due to air mass transfer or conduction,
  • air infiltration and exfiltration,
  • airborne vapour transfer from the interior above ground and from the exterior below ground,
  • precipitation ingress due to air pressure differences, or
  • condensation.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • the inadequate control of temperatures of interior spaces, drafts, relative humidity, or water accumulation,
  • pollutant ingress, including soil gas, combustion products from parking garages, and particulates,
  • the generation of pollutants from biological growth or from materials that become unstable on wetting, or
  • deterioration, which could lead to compromised integrity of environmental separators.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • negative effects on the air quality of indoor spaces,
  • the inadequate thermal comfort of persons, and
  • contact with moisture.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
Intent 2: 
To expand the application of Subsection 4.1.7. to wind loads on elements identified in Sentences 5.1.4.1.(3) and 5.2.2.2.(1), with respect to the direct implications of non-compliance with the objectives of Structural Safety and Structural Sufficiency of the Building.
