Attribution
[F20,F80-OS3.1] Applies to floors and elements that support floors.
Application
Application 1: 
Cementitious materials and aggregates for mortar and grout, in buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9], used in:
  • unreinforced masonry and masonry veneer walls, nominally reinforced masonry where vertical joints in adjacent courses are aligned [see Article 9.20.9.1.], and loadbearing masonry elements reinforced as required by Article 9.20.1.2. in regions where the seismic spectral response acceleration, Sa(0.2), is greater than 0.35 [see Subsection 9.20.15.], where:
    • the walls are not in contact with the ground,
    • the wall height above the foundation wall does not exceed 11 m, and
    • the roof or floor assembly above the first storey is not of concrete construction,
  • mortar, grout, mortar joints, corbelling and protection for unit masonry foundation walls [see Sentence 9.15.2.2.(2)],
  • interior masonry foundation walls not subject to lateral earth pressure [see Sentence 9.15.4.10.(1)], and
  • masonry units in chimneys [see Sentence 9.21.4.1.(1)] and fireplaces [see Sentence 9.22.1.2.(1)] that are not in contact with the ground.
Exceptions: 
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.20.1.1.(2), which applies to masonry walls other than those described above, or where the masonry is designed for specified loads on the basis of ultimate and serviceability limit states, and
  • Sentence 9.20.6.4.(4), which applies to masonry veneer required to be individually supported by the backing material.

Intent
Intent 1: 
To limit the probability that the performance of cement and aggregate under expected structural and environmental loads will fall significantly below expectations, which could lead to cracking at mortar joints and inadequate bonding to masonry units.
This is to limit the probability of:
  • compromised structural integrity of masonry construction,
  • where masonry construction is part of an environmental separator, the displacement or failure of required environmental separation elements, which could lead to deterioration,
  • in assemblies exposed to moisture or the exterior, damage and deterioration, or
  • an inability to resist expected loads, which could lead to:
    • the excessive movement or deformation of walls, or
    • the excessive deflection or vibration of floors.
For floors and elements supporting floors, this is to limit the probability of excessive deflection, which could lead to persons losing their balance, tripping or falling, which could lead to harm to persons.
