Sentence 3.5.3.3.(2)

Intent 1:

To supersede the requirements of Sentence 3.5.3.3.(1), which would otherwise require a room containing elevator machinery to be separated from the elevator hoistway by a fire separation, and waive such separation if certain conditions are met [the room and the hoistway are separated from all other parts of the building].

This is to limit the probability that:

• a fire involving the room and hoistway will spread to other parts of the building, which could lead to damage to the building, and
• a fire will spread from other parts of the building into the room and hoistway, which could lead to damage to the building.
