To limit the probability of:
- an inadequate protection for roofing membranes carried
over the perimeter cant strip, which could lead to mechanical damage
or exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, which could lead
to membrane failure, or
- water overflowing the flashing and returning under the
edge of the roofing membrane by capillary action or wind pressure.
This is to limit the probability of
water accumulating and penetrating exterior walls, which could lead
to deterioration, which could lead to the structural failure of roofs
or assemblies protected by roofs, which could lead to harm to persons.
