Intent 1:

To limit the probability that the calculation of the deflection of elements or components will not take into account the expected lateral deflection and twist of the building structure, including inelastic deformation, due to the maximum expected seismic ground motions, which could lead to damage to or displacement of attached or adjacent components of the building, which could lead to:

• components of the building falling or sliding, which could lead to damage to the building, or
• damage to and functional failure of a component's system, which could impede the intended use and occupancy of the building.
