To limit the probability that the design of foundations will not take into account the serviceability limit state requirements, including the maximum expected total and differential settlement of the foundation system, which could lead to the excessive displacement of foundations, which could lead to:

• damage to the building, or
• excessive distortion of the building, which could impede the intended use and occupancy of the building.
