Intent 1:

To limit the probability that buildings with a gravity induced lateral demand irregularity in areas with strong ground motions will not be designed using an acceptable method, which could lead to the Seismic Force Resisting System being unable to function effectively, which could lead to the excessive deformation of the building structure, which could lead to:

• damage to the building, or
• damage to the building, which could impede the intended use and occupancy of the building.
