To limit the probability that power supply conductors will fail prematurely when exposed to fire, which could lead to emergency lighting not operating properly in a fire situation, which could lead to fire emergency response operations being delayed or ineffective, which could lead to:

• delays in the evacuation or movement of persons to a safe place, which could lead to harm to persons, and
• the spread of fire to other parts of the building, which could lead to harm to persons.
