To limit the probability of excessive soil settlement
beneath foundation footings, which could lead to:
- structural damage to foundations or damage to foundations'
moisture-control elements, or
- where settlement occurs at water-service locations,
the rupture of water lines, which could lead to leakage and undermining
of the foundation, which could lead to the structural failure of foundations
and superstructures.
At sewer-line locations, this is to limit the probability
of unsanitary conditions, which could lead to harm to persons.
