ObjectiveOS1 Fire Safety
Attribution
(a) [F20,F21,F80-OS1.1] Applies where concrete supports or is used in chimneys or fireplaces.
Application
Application 1:
Minimum compressive strength of site-batched, cast-in-place concrete that is not required to be reinforced that is used in:
  • footings, foundation walls, walls, columns, grade beams and piers, and
  • fireplaces and chimneys.
This applies to buildings to which Part 9 applies [see Sentence 1.3.3.3.(1) of Division A for application of Part 9].
Exceptions:
except as stated in:
  • Sentence 9.12.4.1.(1), which applies to concrete in trenches beneath footing, and
  • the second row of Table 9.15.4.2.A., which applies to concrete in foundation walls, where a structural capacity of 15 MPa is inadequate based on the thickness of the wall and the height of the finish ground above the basement floor or crawl space ground cover.

Intent
Intent 1:
To limit the probability of insufficient compressive strength to resist expected gravity and lateral loads.
Where concrete supports or is used in chimneys or fireplaces, this is to limit the probability of the compromised integrity of the chimney or fireplace, which could lead to the ignition of combustible building components.
This is to limit the probability of harm to persons.
